Why Early "Intervention Matters" for You and Your Parents

"Sometimes when we think of occupational, physical or speech therapy, we think of someone recovering from an injury or stroke. However, occupational, physical, and speech therapists (or SLPs – speech language pathologists) can also be powerful tools used to help older adults maintain their independence – even when there hasn’t been a “notable” medical event.

As an occupational therapist and adult daughter of aging parents, I’ve learned the value of rehab services to maintain independence, prevent injury and enhance overall quality of life. As I’ve watched my own parents begin to age, I know that there is a delicate balance between respecting their desire for independence and my concern for their safety. Thankfully, the dynamic trio of OT, PT, and ST are available and happy to help! They are trained to assess your parents’ current level of function, identify potential areas of risk, and offer solutions to prevent decline in order to keep your parents safer within their home.

The concept of helping older adults stay in their homes independently and safely is called “Aging in Place.” If your goal is to help your parent stay independent in their own home for as long as possible, you don't have to do it alone. Read on to see how OTs, PTs, and SLPs work together to support your loved one’s safety."

Physical Therapy (PT): Movement Experts

The Goal: To keep your parents moving safely and confidently.

  • As we age, balance becomes less reliable, joints get stiffer, and there can be increased pain. A physical therapist doesn't just "do exercises" with your parent; they analyze how they move, determine specific areas of weakness, and provide hands-on interventions.
  • Balance Training: PTs identify specific weaknesses that could lead to falls before a fall happens. They focus on prevention of falls so that you and your parent can have more peace of mind.
  • Pain Management: They use manual techniques and other measures to reduce pain without relying solely on medication.
  • Equipment Fitting: If your parents need equipment like a walker or cane for safety, a PT ensures it’s the right fit. They educate so that your parent knows how to use it safely in the home and in the community, especially when navigating more challenging areas such as carpets, stairs, or curbs.

Occupational Therapy (OT) : Living Experts

The Goal: Foster the ability to perform daily activities - known as "occupations” - safely, independently, and with dignity.

Sometimes stiff joints, pain, and/or weakness can impact our independence with our daily activities and hobbies. OTs are the experts in working with patients and families to determine how to maintain, and even gain, independence for daily living.

  • Home Modification: An OT can review home setup and spot high-risk areas you might miss, like lighting issues or an unsafe bathroom.
  • Adaptive Tools: OTs are the master of “life hacks” – gadgets that help with daily living tasks like buttoning shirts, opening jars, or getting socks on when bending over becomes difficult.
  • Energy Conservation: If your parent runs out of energy quickly or is unable to finish tasks, an OT can teach them how to pace their daily activities and make adjustments to their tasks in order save energy for the things they love.

Speech-Language Pathology (SLP): Connection Experts (More Than Just Talking!)

The Goal: To preserve communication, swallowing, and cognitive "sharpness."

Many people automatically think that speech therapists only focus on speech. Speech therapists do focus on this, but their expertise spans far beyond that area. They are essential for three significant areas of aging:

Cognitive Health: If you’ve noticed your mom or dad struggling with increased memory loss, managing his/her meds, or losing track of bills, an SLP uses techniques that can sharpen memory and improve problem-solving.

Safe Swallowing: Does your parent cough frequently while eating or drinking? This can lead to pneumonia & hospitalization. The muscles involved in speaking can be impacted with generalized weakness just like the muscles in their arms and legs. An SLP assesses swallowing quality and provides exercises so they can swallow safely.

Clear Communication: Has your parent become quieter and harder to understand? Have they started to withdraw from conversations? It may not be lack of interest. Voice clarity, which is a focus area of speech therapy, is important for communication and maintaining social engagement.

Why "Early Intervention" Matters for Adult Children

Waiting for a medical event (like a broken hip) before seeking therapy is a common mistake. Prevention is key and bringing these professionals in proactively provides three huge benefits:

1. Reduced Caregiver Burden: When you have the confidence that your parent can safely bathe, dress, and move around in their home, the physical and emotional load on you decreases significantly.

2. Confidence (for both of you): Both you and your parent gain peace of mind when they gain the ability to stay active when you aren't there.

3. Cost Savings: Therapy can be a huge cost savings compared to an ER visit, hospitalization, or a nursing home stay. Prevention is key!

How to Start the Conversation

Most of these services are covered by Medicare and other insurances if there is a "functional need." You or your parent can start by telling their primary doctor about your concerns and asking for a therapy referral.

Aging in Place – Let Curative Therapy Services help!

We offer aging in place services at Curative Therapy Services. Our OTs, PTs, and SLPs are experts in their fields and work collaboratively with each other, our patients, their physicians, and their families to make aging in place a reality for older adults.

You can have your parent’s doctor fax us the referral or give us a call and we can walk you through the steps.

We look forward to hearing from you and navigating this road together!
