A Simple Guide to Lymphedema for Patients and Families

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition where an abnormal amount of protein-rich fluid accumulates in a specific region of the body. It can occur almost anywhere in the body from the head, neck, trunk, abdomen and genitals to the arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet and toes.

Symptoms and Effects

The effects of lymphedema can impact your daily life in several ways:

· Physical Discomfort: Pain or a persistent sense of heaviness

· Reduced Mobility: Difficulty moving the affected part of the body

· Skin Changes: Noticeable changes in skin texture or appearance

· Daily Challenges: Difficulty fitting into your usual clothing or footwear

Why Does It Occur?

The lymphatic system consists of both superficial and deep structures which are present throughout your entire body. Lymphedema is caused by the inability of the lymphatic system to properly remove the water and protein from the tissues in a region of the body. This inability or failure? may be caused by:

· Congenital Factors: Improper development of the lymphatic system at birth

· Medical Treatments: Damage from surgery or radiation, particularly during cancer treatment when lymph nodes are removed or radiated

· Surgical Impact: Incisions necessary for common procedures like joint replacements or abdominal surgeries can disrupt the lymphatic vessels that run just below the skin

· Lifestyle Factors: A change to a more sedentary lifestyle, which decreases movement and increases pressure at certain areas throughout the system

Timing of Onset: Lymphedema can develop suddenly in some instances and in others can develop gradually over time. If you have ever had surgery in a region or have had cancer treatment you could be at risk of developing lymphedema. In some cases, lymphedema can take many years, even decades, to develop.

Professional Treatment and Care

Treatment of lymphedema requires the expertise of a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. These are physical (PT) or occupational (OT) therapists with specialized training in these complex symptoms.

Your therapist will perform a thorough evaluation and create a personalized plan for you and your caregivers. A comprehensive plan typically includes:

· Specific exercises

· Compression wrapping

· Specialized massage

The length of treatment can vary considerably depending on the symptoms the patient has at the time of the evaluation.
