Colleen

How Colleen, a client at Curative Adult Day Services, starts her day is a metaphor for how she approaches life.

“Colleen may arrive at Curative each day in her wheelchair, but she isn’t about to stay in it,” explains Tomorrow, the Adult Day Services program coordinator. “Once she gets here, she gets up out of her chair and walks around. Nothing is going to slow her down. She has so much enthusiasm, it is great to have her here.”

Colleen has been coming to Curative for about six years now. When asked how Adult Day Services has helped Colleen, her mom Kathy would say it has given her a place to be with people her own age with shared interests.

“I like that I get to socialize and just hang out with my friends,” explains Colleen. “We do activities like bowling and singing. We talk about the celebrity birthdays of that day. My favorite celebrity is Taylor Swift. I just love her.”

In addition to socialization, Adult Day Services helps clients set goals they would like to work toward. “One of Colleen’s goals is to be a mentor, and she really takes that to heart,” explains Tomorrow. “She likes to help her friends. Colleen even brings her own iPad with her because one of her friends is non verbal and has a goal to learn to use a computer or iPad to communicate. Colleen sets aside her time to help her friend master these skills. She is a remarkable mentor to others at Adult Day Services.”

“We are so thankful for all Curative has given Colleen,” adds Kathy. “I love the impact Curative has had on Colleen.” And likewise, the staff at Curative loves the impact Colleen has had on their program.
